What is a single-unit franchise?

A single-unit franchise is the classic entry model: one owner operates one location of the brand. It requires the lowest investment of the four ownership structures and is how most first-time franchisees start, often with the owner working in the business day-to-day.
Single-unit ownership concentrates risk and reward in one location. Many systems allow strong single-unit operators to expand into multi-unit ownership later, which is why franchisors track unit-level economics closely.
In practice
For most single-unit owners the franchise is also their job, so the decision is as much about the daily role as the money. Expect your time to go on staffing, scheduling, local marketing and brand inspections rather than on strategy. Because a single location offers little diversification, lenders and franchisors often ask the owner for a personal guarantee. A common misunderstanding is that a small deal means a negotiable contract; single-unit buyers usually sign the brand's standard form with little room for change.
Not to be confused with
A single-unit franchise is one location under one franchise agreement. A multi-unit franchise covers several locations, often with a development commitment, and an area developer holds rights to a territory on a schedule. Starting with a single unit does not prevent expansion, but rights to future units are not automatic unless the contract grants them.
What to check before you sign
- Does the franchisor require you to work in the business personally, as disclosed in Item 15 of a US FDD, and could a manager replace you later?
- Do you get a right of first refusal on new locations near yours, or can another owner open the next unit?
- Will you sign a personal guarantee, and does it continue after you sell the unit or the agreement ends?
