What is a multi-unit franchise?
Multi-Unit Franchise · franquicia multi-unidad · امتياز متعدد الوحدات · 多店特许经营
A multi-unit franchisee owns and operates several locations of the same brand, usually under a development agreement committing to an opening schedule. Multi-unit operators benefit from shared management, purchasing scale and stronger economics — and control a growing share of franchised units worldwide.
Multi-unit ownership professionalizes franchising: operators build management layers, spread overhead across locations and often negotiate better terms. Many franchisors now prefer experienced multi-unit partners for new market entry.
In practice
Multi-unit ownership is a different job from running a store: the owner manages managers. Before approving additional units, franchisors usually look at the operator's track record, available capital and management structure, and may approve each new location separately based on how existing ones perform. Owners build shared functions such as area management, finance and recruitment. A frequent misunderstanding is that more units automatically lower costs; that overhead arrives before the purchasing and scheduling savings do.
Not to be confused with
Multi-unit describes how many units you own, not a contract type. You can become multi-unit by buying units individually, by acquiring resales, or through an area development agreement with a schedule and territory. Unlike a master franchisee, a multi-unit owner operates its own units and does not sell franchises to others.
What to check before you sign
- Do your agreements cross-default, so that a breach or closure at one unit allows the franchisor to terminate your other units?
- Are fees, royalties or renewal terms reduced for additional units, and is each concession written into that unit's agreement?
- Can you move managers, stock and staff between your units, and must each location have its own approved manager?
