What is a discovery day in franchising?

Discovery Day · día de descubrimiento · يوم الاستكشاف · 考察日

Discovery day is the milestone meeting — at the franchisor's headquarters or virtually — where a qualified candidate meets the leadership team, sees the operation, and both sides make a final mutual assessment before awarding the franchise. It usually comes late in the process, after disclosure review.

Industry funnel data shows discovery-day attendees convert to signed franchisees at far higher rates than earlier-stage leads, which is why franchisors invest heavily in getting the right candidates there. Candidates should arrive with their remaining hard questions — it is a two-way evaluation.

In practice

A discovery day agenda typically includes presentations from operations, marketing, training and finance leaders, a visit to a working unit or training centre, and interviews in which the franchisor assesses you. Some franchisors ask to meet a spouse or business partner involved in the decision. Under the US FTC Franchise Rule, what is said on the day may not contradict the disclosure document. A common misunderstanding is that you should be ready to sign on the spot; under that rule, no binding agreement or payment may come before the required period after disclosure.

Not to be confused with

Discovery day is an evaluation meeting, not a contract step. It differs from a franchise expo or webinar, which are early-stage marketing events open to many prospects, and from validation calls, where you speak with existing franchisees without the franchisor present. It does not replace reading the disclosure document.

What to check before you sign

  • Will you meet the people who would actually train and support you, not only senior leaders and the sales team?
  • Which open questions from your disclosure review, such as litigation, closures and fees, will you raise, and will answers be confirmed in writing?
  • Can you speak with franchisees privately, away from the event, rather than only with owners the franchisor invites?

Questions to raise with the franchisor and your own adviser — general information, not legal advice. Rules differ by country.
